When I was a little kid, I used to dream of sailing around the world. My dad used to get a sailing magazine which had a lot of coverage of single handed sailing races. There was one in particular that really captured my imagination, because every skipper would have to sail completely alone. They would be at sea for weeks, or even months at a time, with nothing around them but endless seas and skies. To some people, it would sound like a nightmare, but to me it seemed like an absolute paradise.

I used to watch Americas cup sailing races with my dad back then. They would only be once every few years, but they would give us enough to keep talking about for months afterwards. Unlike some sailing races where a whole fleet of boats compete for the mark, Americas cup racing consists of a series of match races. Two gigantic sloops jockey behind the finish line for the chance to get the lead before the race starts. Once the whistle is blown, it is often over as it begins. The boat with the best position can sometimes stay ahead the whole race.

This is not always the case, however. Americas cup sailing is not a one design class, so the two boats often have different strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes one boat is better in light wind, while the other sails better in high winds. Other times, one Americas cup sailing boat tacks upwind very well, while the other has a big advantage downwind. It all depends on the designs, the crews, and most of all, the skippers.

I used to daydream about being on an Americas cup boat from time to time, but I knew that the chances were slim. Americas cup racers were crewed by the very best ocean racers and, living in the Midwest, I simply did not have the connections or the experience. That is why I was so overjoyed one vacation when my dad hit me with a surprise.

He had booked us a trip on one of the Americas cup sailing boats. Apparently, many of the old, retired boats live a sort of second life giving tours to vacationers. I was pretty psyched to get on board, and it turns out that I was not disappointed. It was one of the most thrilling afternoons of my life up to this point, and that is no lie!

The American revolution was one of the most fascinating events in all of history. Ever since I was in 6th grade, I was fascinated by it. At the time, I was into cloak and dagger stuff – the cold war was in full swing, and I dreamed of outsmarting Russians like James Bond did – and so I did a report on spies in the American revolution. I had no idea how big a role skulduggery played in the war of independence until I actually looked into it myself. Counter-espionage was not very sophisticated at the time, so both sides made extensive use of intelligence to gain information on troop movements, enemy supplies, popular support, and all other manner of important information.

The American war for independence was about way more than troop movements, behind the scenes spying, speeches, and strategy, however. It was about an ideal – or rather, several. The way the American revolution is taught in schools is a little bit incomplete. They simplify American revolutionary thought to the famous statements of the founding fathers, but there was so much more to it. The founding fathers wanted votes for rich, property owning white men, but some of the rank and file had more radical ideals. Many of the troops who fought in the American revolution dreamed of a world of complete equality, where everyone had enough to eat, and equal rights under the law. The fact that the America we built has more in common with the dreams of the founding fathers than those of the troops should not diminish the importance of their vision as well.

As a matter of fact, the more I read about the American revolution, the more fascinating the subject becomes. It has always amazed me that such issues as taxation without representation were enough to inspire people to lay down their lives in an all out war with their own country. With the French revolution, the industrial revolution, and the war for independence all happening in the same era, the world was undergoing one of the most far-reaching shakeups that it had ever been through. I feel like we are not given the whole story in schools – that there was much more to it than simple complaints about British economic policies towards the colonies. I don’t quite understand the whole thing yet, but with every American history book I learn, I feel like I get a little bit closer.

All occasion greeting cards are a really useful way to keep in touch with the people in your life who do not live near you. A lot of people think that all occasion cards (or letters for that matter) are passe and outdated, but nothing could be further from the truth. The very fact that less people send mail nowadays makes it that much more precious. People are going to be really happy to get a card from you, because cards are not sent that much anymore. For just a little effort, you can make a big difference in the life of one of your friends.

All occasion cards can be a great craft project. Basically, you can make them out of anything and in any style you want. One of my favorite ways to make them is out of handmade recycled paper. It has a wonderful, varied texture that creates a neat background to the card. Then all I have to do is cut out letters from a different, darker sheet of recycled paper that say something like “thinking of you” and paste them on.

Of course, a lot of people want a more formal look for their all occasions cards. If you are going to be sending all occasion cards off to bosses, coworkers, and business contact, you probably aren’t going to be going for a homemade, crafty vibe. In that case, you can print your cards out on your computer. Get a picture that you like (either one you have taken yourself, or one you have sound on the Internet) and put it on the front of the card. It should be something scenic and relaxing, something that will give someone a good feeling no matter when they look at it. Then, you can set it up with a template so that, whenever you want to, you can print out an all occasion card with whatever personalized message you want.

Then again, a lot of people prefer to buy their all occasion cards. I have a friend who runs an online cards store, and he tells me that business has never been better. He can not come up with enough designs for different cards, and frequently receives requests for new ideas. Because he has professional printing gear, he can offer well made cards at a cheap price and still make a good profit. All in all, it looks like all occasion cards will be around for a long time.

Having the right advertising products is crucial for any successful advertising campaign. A lot of people take a pretty lazy approach to promotional products. Every year, they get the same advertising time with the same logo on it which they give out in their office. They think of the advertising product as an inexpensive, but also an ineffective tool. As a result, they don’t put much energy into it.

In my experience, however, advertising products can be so much more. As part of a promotional campaign, having the right advertising products can do wonders for your business. It is all about creativity and keeping things fresh. It is much easier than you might think to generate energy and enthusiasm about a new product or deal. Giving out promotional products as part of some sort of contest, or as rewards for signing up for some service, always makes people feel like they got a little something extra. If your advertising products is handed out by attractive and charismatic salespeople, all the better!

There are more products for advertising than most people consider. Try going beyond the usual t-shirts, pens, key chains, and other knickknacks. Don’t get me wrong – these can be a great way to get your name out, but sometimes a little more originality can serve you even better. Advertising companies can put your name on anything, so the only limit is your imagination. Laser pointers, hand-held games, puzzles, personal organizers, and other relatively elaborate prizes can really enhance your public image. Everyone goes through dozens of pens a year, but if every time they write down a note in their scheduler they see a particular corporate name, it will have a much more powerful effect.

Promo products are not only good for increasing brand recognition, but also for advertising new products. If used in the right way, they can be part of a more cohesive campaign to generate buzz around some upcoming idea or innovation. For example, holography is relatively inexpensive nowadays. Incorporating a small holographic image of some new product on promotional items can get people really thinking about it! After all, everyone thinks that holographs are cool! Once you really start to think about it, the possibilities are endless. It is all just a matter of keeping it fresh and not being afraid to take a little risk now and then. Advertising products are cheap enough that you can really experiment with them.

With advertising campaigns, things never turn out quite like you were thinking they would. I have worked with dozens of advertising companies doing hundreds of ad campaigns over the years, and the only thing to expect is the unexpected. On the one hand, this is exactly what makes marketing and advertising interesting. It is such an incredibly dynamic field that you never know quite what to expect. Who wants a job that doesn’t keep them on their toes? I would rather have excitement and adventure than have to slog through the same routine day after day.

On the other hand, it means that only certain kinds of people are really suited for advertising campaigns. Just being clever and talented isn’t enough. You have to be a dynamic thinker, able to adjust to changing event. Without a little bit of that fly by the seat of your pants spirit, you will never make it.

When you are looking for a company for your ad campaign, this is exactly what you should keep in mind. There are many old, prestigious, and time-tested marketing companies out there, but not all of them are really fit for the 21st century. Sometimes, it makes more sense to do business with a smaller outfit tuned to a regional market than to be awed and impressed by a nationwide operation that may not understand the needs of a particular niche. The only important thing, after all, is results. If a regional company can get your regional advertising results, all the better. If a nationwide advertising agency doesn’t have a home market, they will only be useful to you once you already have a big following.

Obviously, every advertising campaign is different, and what works for one will not necessarily work for another. That is why it is so important to be flexible. As a business owner myself, I never fully delegate my advertising campaigns to ad specialists. What I hire are consultants – people who can give me expert advice on how to do something better. The final decision, however, has to rest with me. Say what you want about the power of successful advertising professionals. For me, my own business instincts have to play a big role in decisions. That is what makes me a businessman. Other people have a much different view about advertising campaigns, however. For them, a large outfit that will take control of every aspect of the operation is ideal. I say to each his own.

Though there are many different uses for transfer paper, the most common thing they are used for is to make t shirts at home. These can also be made for school fundraisers or even for a small advertising tool for smaller businesses. Though the paper often works rather well, there are things that can go wrong. It is usually the user that has the problem though, and I know this all too well myself. I have ruined many shirts and lost many pieces of paper because of my inability to slow down and pay attention to what I am doing.

The first thing to know about transfer paper is that it is a little pricy, but they are not so expensive that the average person can not buy them. Some are made to work with white or very light colored shirts like yellow or very pale blue or peach. There are some types of transfer paper that are made to work with black shirts, and also perhaps dark blue and purple. These are different in many ways, the paper made for black is more expensive, but that is because of how it works.

When using the transfer paper for light colored shirts, a person has to make the design on their computer. It is important to make sure the image is the same size as the paper it is going to be printed on, and in fact, having it a little smaller is even better. The image must be flipped before it is printed out on the transfer paper or it will be backwards on the shirt. There is usually an option for this on any photo manipulation software you can use for this purpose. Just make sure the printer is not flipping it too, or the image will be right back where it started.

When using black shirt transfer paper, this should be printed as is or the image will not be right. Many that are use to working with the white type will forget this and flip the image. This does not need to be flipped, and will work in a different way. There will be a while block on the shirt, and the image and words will be on that white block. This might be hard to get straight, so anyone working with this type of transfer paper should remember it is important to take some time to be sure it is right before applying the heat to set it on the shirt.

The Stock Market

It is a well known fact that a shrewd investor can make a fortune on the stock market, but few people understand the way it is done. Although there are thousands of rags to riches tales out there, there are countless thousands more where unwary investors lost everything playing the stocks. That is why, if you plan on stock market investing, it is crucial to get a good, solid education before you even make your first move.

A lot of people think that getting a book on the stock market is the way to go, but it is not. As a matter of fact, until you have a solid grounding in economics, you should not trade stocks. Read a few economic text-books, and then get a stock market guide. After all, you can not understand the way the market works in isolation. Only by seeing it as a part of a wider system can you really get an idea of how best to invest your money.

Once you get your head around the stock market, you can start to trade. The best way to do it is to look at stock trading as like gambling: never invest more than you can afford to lose. As you get better and more experienced, you can risk more money on safe trades, but up until that point, it is best to err on the side of caution. After all, how are you going to make a fortune if you lose all your money on a bad trade early on?

Once you are an investor, you can benefit from the rapid flow of market information. Nowadays, there are more tools to watch and trade on the stock market than ever before. There are market articles, stock market quotes, and in-depth analysis, all available at the click of a mouse, and all continuously updated all day long.

This has actually changed strategies for investing in the stock market somewhat. Back in the day, the trader with the best understanding of economics and the business climate would almost always make the most money. Nowadays, it is the investor who is most able to quickly and efficiently process new information. Sitting at your computer all day and watching the stocks, you can make a lot of money if you are good at it. Just be sure to start off slow. If you don’t have the knack for investment, it should not cost your life savings to find out.

Everyone wants to be famous. Have you ever noticed this about humans? Oh, of course you have, because you want it too. It’s only natural to crave recognition, popularity and oodles of cash. These are attributes that often make the world easier to live in. And so tons of aspiring stars try their hand at success every year. This is how every talent search across the country makes its money. They feed off of the American dream. Now, I can’t say that I can truly blame them. It is a smart way to make capital and folks will certainly buy into it, because they naturally hope to succeed. But, I implore you to STOP and think for a moment before you empty your savings account.

I can speak from experience when it comes to the standard talent search. I actually ventured off on two of these back in the 1990s. One was entitled IMTA, and the other was called Manhattan Model search. Both seemed like decent competitions at first. I was promised to see dozens of scouts all in one room. You see, this is what went down with IMTA. They had me fork out almost five grand for a plane ticket to L.A., 6 nights at a hotel, and other fees I didn’t entirely grasp at the time. Hey, I was only 19 and this was in 1996. Anyway, I was able to do a few competitions, and go into a room for a few hours with a bunch of agency reps and scouts for modeling and film. All seemed okay for the most part. I made two connections that panned out to something. But, why in the world did this talent search cost so much. I had to find out. Well, sure enough I discovered that we were paying for the agents to fly in and stay at the hotel. How bogus can you get! For me, this talent search turned out a scam in the end. As opposed to paying all that money and flying across the country, one could just take a few snapshots and send them to whatever agencies they please. You don’t even need a professional photo shoot done. If an agency is interested in you, they will set one up.

It’s sad to think that I went to a second talent search after IMTA. I guess I was getting anxious for something. Fortunately this one only cost me 300 dollars, which is much less than the prior. My advice to aspiring talents and models is to get online and send information and pictures electronically now days. The web can save you some major bucks.

The other day I was watching a documentary about security and privacy in America. I had never realized how many surveillance cameras were out there before! They are practically everywhere. In your typical city street, there will be a surveillance camera on every block, and more likely three or four of them! There are video security cameras in ATM machines, on top of public buildings, at stoplights, and in a variety of other places as well. Not every surveillance camera that you see is operational, of course, but many of them are. It is safe to assume that, no matter where you are in a city, you aren’t alone. There’s probably a camera watching you

it made me wonder about CCTV surveillance cameras. I was curious about how necessary and how affordable they were. I had been wanting to upgrade my home security system for quite a while, and this seemed like the perfect chance to do it. I wasn’t sure whether or not a surveillance video camera was just a bit over the top, but I figured that if it didn’t cost much money, it might be worth checking out.

It turns out that there are a number of simple surveillance cameras that are available for people interested in inexpensive home security. The cheapest option, of course, is fake surveillance cameras. One of the key principles of home security – or any security for that matter – is that if you can scare them away, you don’t have to worry about catching them. Just having keep out signs, a large and menacing looking dog, and a surveillance system can be enough to keep out any but the most hardened criminals. Most of the time, someone breaking into your house is only doing it because they think it is an easy target. If you make them think that they might get caught, they will probably stay away.

Nonetheless, I wanted some power to my security system. I decided to go one step up. I bought some used, black and white security cameras from a secondhand shop. They weren’t the cutting-edge surveillance cameras that you see on government buildings. They were old, clunky, and did not have very good resolution. Nonetheless, they were good enough to make a positive identification from. I installed them in every room. Because they were old, they were also somewhat oversized, and very visible. It is nice knowing that, if someone does break into my house, I have a system in place.

Back when I was in college, we used to have a lot of fun with the suggestion drop box in the school cafeteria. There was nothing particularly funny about the acrylic suggestion box itself – it was a pretty standard issue device. It had a slot in the top for you to drop suggestions in – small enough that you could put things in, but couldn’t easily remove them. What we liked about this suggestions box was that cafeteria officials would put up letters that were put in it. As long as you did not say anything that was mean or overtly offensive, it would get up on the board for anyone who wanted to look at it. We would always try to outdo each other with funny, clever comments, but never really had anything particularly serious to say about the cafeteria food.

When I got into customer relations years later, I realized how important and serious suggestion boxes could be. The great thing about a suggestion box is that it gives people the opportunity to be honest with you without having to take their time or yours to meet during the workday. You can’t imagine how much I appreciate this as a customer service representative. Anytime something goes wrong in the company, I am the one that gets the grief, even though it is rarely my mistake. If someone has something particularly cutting to say, I would much rather get a comment in the suggestion box than have to deal with them face-to-face. After all, when people come up to face-to-face they look at you as a representative of your company. If they are frustrated about something – even something that isn’t your fault – they are likely to take it out on you.

It helps that I am quick to implement the suggestion box comments that I see. There is a brightly labeled wooden suggestion box in every publicly accessible room in the building, and they all go to me. That way, I am able to route the comments to the appropriate person, guaranteeing that people get to have their say. When people see that their concerns are being met, they are much less likely to get angry with the company. We get to keep more business and have better relationships with our customer. That makes everyone happy – particularly me. Although there isn’t much to a suggestion box in itself, if it is taken seriously and used frequently, It can really make a difference.
